SmartLink Plug installation guide
Install and bind the SmartLink Plug to your utility smart meter using the EnergyGrid App. The end-to-end setup takes about 10 minutes; meter binding can take 24–48 hours after the utility processes the request. For background on what the SmartLink Plug is and what it does, see the Featured project overview.
Before you begin
Gather these items before starting the installation.
Requirements
- SmartLink Plug
- EnergyGrid App installed on iOS or Android
- EnergyGrid account credentials (administrator access required)
- Home Wi-Fi network name and password
- Wi-Fi enabled on the mobile device
- Standard wall outlet within 30 feet (9 meters) of the utility smart meter
Use the 2.4 GHz network if your router broadcasts separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks.
Placement guidelines
Choose a location that meets all of the following criteria:
- On the same side of the house as the smart meter
- With minimal walls or large appliances between the SmartLink Plug and the meter
- Within 30 feet (9 meters) of the smart meter
Do not place the SmartLink Plug directly behind the meter, near metal racks, near electrical panels, or behind large appliances. These locations interfere with the wireless signal.
Mobile app setup
Power on the SmartLink Plug first. Then use the EnergyGrid App to connect the device to your account.
-
Open the app
Launch the EnergyGrid App on your mobile device.
-
Enter your credentials
Type your EnergyGrid account username and password. Administrator access is required.
Start setup
-
Open the Toolkit
Tap the Toolkit icon in the navigation bar at the bottom of the screen.
-
Begin setup
Locate the SmartLink Plug card and tap Set Up. Tap Begin Setup on the welcome screen.
QR code scanning
-
Grant camera access
Tap Allow when prompted to grant camera access.
-
Scan the code
Locate the QR code on the back of the SmartLink Plug. Hold the QR code in front of the phone camera until it comes into focus. A blue checkmark appears when the scan succeeds. The app uses the QR code to identify the device and prepare the Wi-Fi connection.
Physical setup
-
Plug in the device
Insert the SmartLink Plug into a standard wall outlet within 30 feet (9 meters) of the smart meter.
-
Check the LED
Wait for the LED indicator to pulse blue. This indicates the SmartLink Plug is ready to connect.
-
Continue in the app
Tap Continue in the app.
If the LED does not pulse blue, tap Need Help? in the top-right corner of the screen for troubleshooting options.
Wi-Fi connection
-
Connect to the SmartLink network
The SmartLink Plug creates a temporary Wi-Fi network to communicate with your phone. A prompt appears asking you to join this network (displayed as "EBX_000-00000X" or similar). Tap Join.
-
Select your home network
Choose your home Wi-Fi network from the list. Select the 2.4 GHz network.
-
Enter the password
Type the Wi-Fi password and tap Continue.
Meter binding
-
Submit the request
The app automatically submits a bind request to the utility after the Wi-Fi connection is established. This request authorizes the SmartLink Plug to communicate with the smart meter.
-
Wait for processing
The utility typically accepts the bind request within 5 minutes. After the utility accepts the bind request, live energy data can take 24–48 hours to appear in the app.
Keep the SmartLink Plug within 30 feet of the smart meter and powered on throughout the binding period.
The Bind Request Complete screen confirms a successful request.
Verify installation
Check these indicators after the utility processes the bind request, which typically takes 24–48 hours.
Success indicators
- The SmartLink Plug LED displays a steady state and is not flashing an error pattern
- Real-time energy usage data appears in the EnergyGrid App
- The SmartLink Plug appears as connected in the Toolkit section of the app
